Is anything really possible? How to know if your dreams can become a reality

When it comes to following your dreams or building a life you love, the go to mantra seems to be "Anything is Possible." But is anything really possible? Learn how to know if your dreams are possible and how you can make them a reality.

At a low time in my young mom life, I would hear "anything is possible" and roll my eyes. I mean, there are limits to "anything" right? People who seem to be following their dreams are off traveling the world, are single and don't have kids. Their life seemed adventurous and fun, but unrealistic for a stay-at-home mom who had kids and responsibilities. My dreams seemed impossible from where I was in my life, so hearing that anything was possible was triggering and annoying.

Is literally anything possible?

I think we all could think of many things that aren't literally possible, like unicorns or dinosaurs coming back from extinction (despite what those Jurassic Park movies say).

But, here's the truth–anything doesn't literally have to be possible in order for your dreams to become a reality.

Thinking this is basically just fear manifesting itself in your life. It's your brains way of keeping you from taking that scary risk and keeping you "safe". This fear is actually a great indicator that deep down, you actually do think what you want is possible, otherwise you wouldn't be afraid of it. (If you want to learn more about this, check out this blog article about fear).

As I live my dream life now, I look back and realize that the reason I didn't think my dreams were possible didn't really come down to the literal meaning of whether anything was possible, but the deeper beliefs around what it takes to make "anything" or your dreams possible. These common misconceptions limited me and kept me stuck in a box and prevented me from making my dreams a reality for many years.

If you are doubting that your dreams are possible, here are some misconceptions that may be holding you back from making them a reality right now.

My dream needs to be realistic to be possible

It's human to want certainty before making any big changes in your life. When you look at your dreams, you want to logically figure out if they're possible and figure out how you will get there. If you can't, it becomes harder to believe that it's possible and it feels like more of a risk because you can't guarantee it'll be a success.

Our greatest adventures, though, are beyond what we can predict in our minds. We can only predict what we have experienced in our past, and even then, it's not a guarantee it will be exactly the same. You do not need to know the how in order for your dream to be possible. In order to make your impossible dreams a reality, you will need to let go of the idea of realistic, choose to believe that what you want is possible in some way, and then take one step at a time.

My dream will happen exactly how I think it will

Even if you think of logical steps that you could take to get to a dream, it will likely not end up looking exactly like that. Challenges and unforeseen roadblocks will come up and you will have to adapt and shift your plan as you go. It's ok to make a plan according to what you know right now, but when it changes (not if, when) if you can accept that this is part of the journey and not let it discourage you, you will adapt and move forward much quicker and keep progressing toward your dream.

I will go from where I am to living my dreams in one step

When you look at other people's successes, it might look like they got there suddenly and effortlessly, but that isn't how it happens for anyone. Our dreams are created in a series of small, intentional steps over time. Some of these steps create bigger results than others, but you're not going to get to living your dreams in one step. When you believe that there is one right step that will get you to where you want to go, it will actually keep you stuck because you are looking for that "right" step which doesn't exist, which then prevents you from taking any steps at all.

Living my dream life and my responsibilities can't exist together

A lot of moms think that their dreams are not possible because they don't see how they can do it with the current responsibilities that they have. They'll say something like, "Well, that sounds nice, but I can't just do that because I have all of these other responsibilities." Responsibilities can be fulfilled in many ways. Perhaps the way you fulfill them now may change as you follow your dreams, but it's not either/or. They can exist together.

Making your dreams a reality

So is anything really possible? I say yes, but only if you have the right perception about it. When you decide to believe that anything is possible as a mindset, rather than from a literal sense, you will not place any limitations on yourself. When you keep your mind open in this way, you will start to notice opportunities you didn't see before.

If you're not sure where to start, here are three steps you can take.

1. Believe

The first step is choosing to believe that anything is possible no matter how unrealistic it sounds. If you don't actually believe that what you want is possible, your brain is not going to expend the energy to help you find a solution, but if you just decide to believe and make it a focus, you are going to be searching for solutions everywhere and that is when the really good ideas come out and you start noticing opportunities you didn't notice before.

2. Know the what, not the how

Rather than try and figure out all of the steps, just figure out what it is you want right now. Get as clear as you can about what living your dream life looks like so that you know where you are trying to go, but don't get bogged down in having to know every step beforehand. That will come one step at a time as you start working towards your dreams.

Sit down and journal what you want in as much detail as possible. What does your dream life look like? What do you do? What do you think about? What do you feel?

3. Start with the end in mind and take the next step

Now that you know what you want, think of one thing you can do to get you one step closer to that. What strengths do you already have that you could use? What do you need to learn about? What roadblocks do you see and how can you remove them?

Anything really is possible

When you take your anything-is-possible mindset and combine it with taking small, intentional steps, you will start seeing that your dreams really can become a reality. Living the dream life is not just meant for certain people; it's meant for everyone– even YOU! You only have one life on this earth. It's time for you to see what's really possible for you.
